Walking in Purpose · Day 6 of 7

Today's reading
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
The city of Colossae sat along a busy trade route, and the people Paul was writing to lived the same kind of divided, compartmentalized lives many of us live today, sacred things in one corner, ordinary work in another, family life somewhere else entirely. Into that divided world, Paul drops a sentence like a stone into still water: "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him" (Colossians 3:17). Whatsoever. All. There is no corner of life left outside those words.
For a first-time reader, this verse is an open door: you do not need a pulpit or a title to live a life of purpose. The meal you cook, the email you send, the floor you sweep, the child you tuck in at night, all of it can be done "in the name of the Lord Jesus." That phrase does not mean attaching a religious label to everything you do. It means doing it under His authority, in a manner worthy of His character, as a representative of who He is.
For those who have walked with God for years, there is a deeper current here. Paul writes to servants, slaves, in the original setting, telling them to work "heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians 3:23). These were people with no status, no recognition, no earthly reward in sight. And Paul tells them that their audience is not their master, it is the Lord Himself. That reframes everything. The most invisible labor, done faithfully, is seen by the One whose seeing matters most.
This is the day's great gift: purpose is not reserved for the spectacular moments. It lives in the ordinary ones, when you choose to bring your whole heart to what is in front of you. The question is never really "Is this task worthy of me?" The question is "Am I bringing what is worthy to this task?" When the answer is yes, when you wash the dishes or lead the meeting or care for the aging parent as unto the Lord, you are walking in purpose, right where you stand.
Pause & reflect
Paul says to do everything, word and deed, "in the name of the Lord Jesus": what does that phrase mean to you in practical terms, and how would your day look different if you applied it to every task?
Is there an area of your life, perhaps your work, your home responsibilities, or a relationship, where you have been going through the motions, disconnected from any sense of meaning or calling?
Choose one routine task you will do today, something ordinary and easy to overlook, and before you begin it, pause and consciously offer it to God as an act of worship.
A prayer for today
Father, I want to stop dividing my life into what matters and what does not. Teach me to do all things, the small and the great, in the name of the Lord Jesus, as unto You and not unto men. Let every ordinary moment become an act of worship, and let my work today be a gift laid at Your feet. Amen.
