Walking in Purpose · Day 4 of 7

Today's reading
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Jesus was sitting on a hillside, surrounded by ordinary people, fishermen with calloused hands, tax collectors with complicated histories, mothers with tired eyes, the sick and the seeking, and He looked at them and said something that must have stopped every conversation cold: "Ye are the salt of the earth" and "Ye are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13-14). Not "you could be" or "you should try to be." You are. Present tense. Declaration, not instruction.
Salt in the ancient world was not a table condiment; it was survival. It preserved meat from rot, it flavored food, it was used in covenants and worship. A world without salt spoiled. When Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth, He was saying: your presence in this world is not decorative, it is preserving. You slow the decay. You bring flavor to what would otherwise be bland and lifeless. The question He raises is not whether you are salt, but whether you have lost your saltiness, whether the influence that should flow naturally from a life surrendered to God has been diluted by compromise or silence.
The image of light is equally urgent. "A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid" (Matthew 5:14). Light does not have to try hard to be light. It simply shines, and darkness has no answer for it. Jesus says your life, your actual, daily, ordinary life, is meant to function like that city on a hill. Not a performance. Not a religious show. A genuine brightness that comes from being connected to the source. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). Notice the destination of the light: it does not end with people admiring you. It ends with people glorifying God.
For the new believer, this is your commissioning, you were saved into a purpose that touches the people around you. For the long-time follower of Jesus, this is worth examining quietly: has your light been shining, or has it been hidden under the bushel of busyness, fear, or the slow drift of a heart that has grown comfortable? Purpose is not only about the grand stage. It shines in a kind word, a faithful presence, a life that smells of something different from the world around it.
Pause & reflect
Jesus uses two everyday images, salt and light, to describe what His followers are meant to be. Which of these two images speaks most to you right now, and why?
Matthew 5:16 says our good works should ultimately lead people to glorify God, not us. Is there an area of your life where you have been hiding your light, perhaps out of fear of judgment, or a desire to blend in?
Think of one person in your life who may need the "salt" of your preserving presence or the "light" of your encouragement today. What is one concrete thing you could do or say to be that for them before the day is over?
A prayer for today
Father, You have called me salt and light, not someday, but today. Forgive me for the times I have hidden what You placed in me. Let my life shine in a way that points every eye not to me, but to You, and may my presence bring Your preserving grace into every room I enter.
