Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Today's reading

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Close your eyes for just a moment and think about the most intricate thing you have ever seen, the veins of a leaf, the pattern of a snowflake, the way a newborn curls its fingers around yours. Now consider that God brought that same unhurried, meticulous care to the making of you. That is exactly what the psalmist David is singing about in Psalm 139, and he wrote it not as a theological lecture but as a breathless act of worship born from personal wonder.

David writes, "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well" (Psalm 139:13-14). The word "reins" here refers to the innermost parts, the kidneys, which in Hebrew thought were the seat of the deepest self. God did not merely sketch you from the outside; He formed your hidden places. "Covered" carries the idea of being knit or woven together, like a master craftsman working a loom in the dark, patient and precise, missing nothing.

For the first-time reader, here is the plain truth of it: you were not a cosmic accident, not a biological coincidence, not a mistake anyone has to explain away. Before you drew your first breath, God was already at work on you. For the believer who has walked long with the Lord, sit with this, David says "my soul knoweth right well." Knowing this truth is not meant to stay in the head. It is meant to settle so deep that your soul knows it the way your lungs know to breathe.

Today, many of us carry wounds that whisper the opposite of this psalm. Rejection, failure, the careless words of someone who should have loved us better, these voices are loud. But they are not authoritative. The One who wove you together in secret speaks louder than any voice that has ever told you that you do not matter. You were made on purpose, with purpose, by a God who called His work marvellous. Let that word land today: marvellous. Not adequate. Not acceptable. Marvellous.

Pause & reflect

  1. 1

What does it mean to you that God formed your "inward parts", the hidden, unseen pieces of who you are, and not just your outward appearance?

  2. 2

Is there a voice from your past or present that contradicts what this psalm says about your worth? What would it look like to bring that voice before God honestly today?

  3. 3

Choose one specific moment today, perhaps when you look in the mirror or feel inadequate at work or home, and speak Psalm 139:14 aloud over yourself. What would change if you made that a daily practice?

A prayer for today

Lord, I confess that I have not always believed I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Today I choose to let Your Word be louder than every voice that has told me otherwise. Teach my soul to know, really know, that Your works are marvellous, and that I am among them. Thank You for making me on purpose.
