Today's reading
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
We have come to the final day of this journey together, and it is fitting that we end not with a command to try harder, but with an invitation. Jesus, standing in the midst of crowds worn thin by religious burdens and daily anxieties, opens His arms and says: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Not "earn it." Not "figure it out." Come. Bring the weight. All of it.
The word Jesus uses for "rest" here is not the rest of sleep alone, it carries the idea of refreshment, of a burden lifted, of a soul that has stopped straining against something too heavy for it. The yoke He offers in exchange is described as easy and light, not because life becomes painless, but because when you are yoked with Christ, you are no longer pulling alone. He is pulling with you, and He is stronger. For the first-time reader: a yoke in the ancient world was a wooden frame that joined two animals together so they could share a load. Jesus is saying, let me carry this with you.
Psalm 46 then gives us the great anchor of the soul: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Not a distant help. Not a help that arrives after the trouble passes. A very present help, present in the earthquake, present when the mountains shake, present when the waters roar. And then, in verse ten, comes one of the most tender commands in all of Scripture: "Be still, and know that I am God." In Hebrew, "be still" means to let go, to release the grip, to stop striving. It is not passivity, it is the active surrender of a soul that has finally decided to trust.
This is where seven days of Scripture have been leading you: not to a technique for managing anxiety, but to a Person. A Shepherd who knows your name. A God who holds you with His right hand. A Savior who invites you to lay down every weight at His feet and rest. The peace He offers is not the absence of trouble. It is His presence in the middle of it, and that presence is enough.
Pause & reflect
Jesus says His yoke is easy and His burden is light, what is the heaviest thing you have been carrying this week that He is inviting you to share with Him right now?
"Be still, and know that I am God", what does the stillness God calls you to require you to stop doing, stop controlling, or stop fearing in this season of your life?
As this seven-day reading plan ends, choose one verse from the past week that you will write somewhere you will see it daily, and make it your anchor verse for the month ahead.
A prayer for today
Lord Jesus, I come to you today, heavy laden and weary, and I take you at your word that you will give me rest. Teach me to be still, to release my grip on the things I cannot control, and to know deep in my bones that you are God. You are my refuge and my strength, and today I choose to rest in you.
