Today's reading
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
Jesus is still speaking to his disciples on the night of his arrest, and he tells them something that must have sounded almost impossible to believe: "It is expedient for you that I go away" (John 16:7). Expedient, meaning it is actually better, more advantageous, to your benefit. How could the departure of Jesus possibly be better than his presence? The answer is the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, and this chapter is his great introduction.
For a new reader, the word Comforter translates the Greek word Paraclete, which carries a rich cluster of meanings: one called alongside to help, an advocate, a counselor, a strengthener. When Jesus was on earth, he was physically present in one place at a time. The Spirit he promised would dwell inside every believer, everywhere, always. The disciples were about to lose the visible Jesus and receive the indwelling God. That is not a step down, that is an astonishing step forward.
Jesus describes the Spirit's work in three directions. Toward the world, the Spirit convicts of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment, he makes the invisible realities of eternity feel real and urgent to human hearts. Toward the disciples, the Spirit guides into all truth, taking the things of Christ and declaring them to those who belong to him. And toward the future, the Spirit shows things to come, so that God's people are never left navigating the unknown without a guide.
For the believer who has walked with the Lord for years, notice the tenderness in verse 22: "your sorrow shall be turned into joy." Jesus does not say your sorrow will be replaced by joy, as if the grief never happened. He says it will be turned, transformed, the same raw material converted into something new. The cross itself is the pattern: the worst Friday in history became the foundation of eternal life. Your sorrow is not wasted in the hands of the Spirit.
You are not left alone today. The Comforter has come, and he is closer than your next breath.
Pause & reflect
Jesus says the Spirit will guide you into all truth, in what area of your life are you most in need of that guidance right now, and have you actually asked?
Is there a grief or sorrow you have been carrying that you have not yet offered to God, something you have been managing on your own rather than letting him transform?
Before you go to sleep tonight, take two minutes to sit quietly and acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit. What would you say to him if you treated him as a person present in the room with you?
A prayer for today
Holy Spirit, I thank you that I am not left as an orphan in this world. You are the Comforter Jesus promised, and you are here. Teach me to lean on you as I would lean on a trusted friend, to ask, to listen, to follow where you lead. Turn my sorrows into joy, as only you can do.
