Today's reading
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The disciples are frightened. Jesus has just told them he is leaving, that one of them will betray him, and that Peter, their rock, will deny him before morning. The room must have felt like the floor was giving way. Into that exact moment of trembling, Jesus speaks some of the most tender words in all of Scripture: "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me" (John 14:1).
For someone new to the Bible, this chapter is a gift and a map. Jesus tells his disciples he is going to prepare a place for them and that he will come back for them. Thomas, honest as ever, says plainly: we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way? And Jesus answers with a claim so absolute it has echoed through two thousand years of human longing: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6). He does not say he knows the way, or that he will show you the way. He says he is the way. The road and the destination are the same Person.
For those who have walked with Christ for years, sit with the word truth for a moment. In a world that treats truth as a preference, Jesus claims to be its very source and substance. Every true thing that has ever been spoken or discovered is true because it reflects, however dimly, the one who is Truth himself. When you trust him, you are not leaning on a feeling or a philosophy, you are standing on the only ground that cannot shift.
And then there is life, not mere existence, but the kind of life that death cannot end. Jesus is not offering a longer version of what you already have. He is offering something qualitatively different: life that flows from the Father himself, through the Son, into everyone who comes.
Whatever is troubling your heart today, and something is, you have been given the same invitation the disciples received in that upper room. Believe. Not blindly, but with eyes wide open on the one who said he is the way home.
Pause & reflect
Jesus says "I am the way, the truth, and the life", which of those three words speaks most directly to where you are right now, and why?
When your heart is troubled, what is your first instinct, and how does Jesus' invitation to "believe also in me" challenge or comfort that instinct?
Is there one area of your life where you have been looking for the way forward everywhere except toward Jesus, and what would it look like to turn toward him there today?
A prayer for today
Lord, my heart is prone to trouble, and the world gives me plenty of reasons to fear. But you have told me not to let it be troubled, and you have not left me without a reason. You are the way when I am lost, the truth when I am confused, and the life when I am running on empty. I believe, help thou mine unbelief.
