Today's reading
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
You have reached the end of seven days, and yet in the truest sense, you are standing at a beginning. The Christian life is not a destination you arrive at, it is a walk, taken one day at a time, in step with a living God. Paul captures this beautifully when he writes, "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25). The word he uses for "walk" here is not the usual Greek word for walking, it means to walk in a row, to keep in step, the way soldiers march in formation. The image is of someone deliberately staying close to the One leading them.
The fruit Paul describes in the verses before, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, these are not things you manufacture through willpower. They are what grows naturally when a life is rooted in the Spirit of God. A new believer sometimes reads this list and feels overwhelmed, as if these are all things to achieve at once. But fruit does not appear overnight. It grows in season, quietly, as the root goes deeper. Your part is to stay connected to the Vine. The fruit is His work in you.
And then Jesus speaks, not as a memory, but as the risen Lord standing before His disciples with all authority in heaven and earth, and He sends them out. Not when they are fully trained. Not when they have all the answers. He sends them as they are, into a world that needs what only He can give, and He seals the commission with the most steadying promise in all of Scripture: "lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20). Always. Not when you feel strong. Not when you have your life together. Always.
This is how you walk day by day, not by having it all figured out, but by trusting that the One who called you is with you every step. The foundations have been laid this week: grace, prayer, the Word, the community of God's people. Now walk on them. Walk slowly if you must. Walk through tears if you must. But walk, and know that you are never walking alone.
Pause & reflect
Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, which one of those qualities do you sense God most wanting to grow in you in this season, and why might that particular fruit be needed in your life right now?
Jesus promises to be with His people "alway", is there a place in your daily life where you have not yet truly brought Him, where you still walk as though you are on your own?
As this seven-day journey closes, what is one habit, practice, or intention you want to carry forward into the weeks ahead to keep these foundations strong in your life?
A prayer for today
Lord Jesus, You have promised to be with me always, even to the end of the world, and I choose to rest the whole weight of my life on that promise today. Grow in me the fruit that only Your Spirit can produce, and make me someone who walks in step with You, not perfectly, but faithfully. Send me where You will, and let me never forget that wherever I go, You are already there. Amen.
