Today's reading
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
There is a verse so familiar that it has been printed on bumper stickers and held up on signs at sporting events, yet familiarity has a way of dulling the edge of a blade that was always meant to cut through to the heart. Open your Bible to John 3:16 and read it slowly, as if for the very first time, because even if you have heard it a thousand times, what it declares about you is worth hearing again.
The word "so" in "For God so loved the world" is not merely an intensifier meaning "very much," though that is certainly true. In the original language it carries the sense of "in this manner", God loved in this specific, costly, unmistakable way: He gave. Love, in God's vocabulary, is never an abstraction. It is always an action. He did not send a message or a movement; He sent His Son. And the verse that follows, John 3:17, is just as stunning: "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." The Son came not to pronounce a verdict of guilt, we had already earned that, but to absorb it Himself.
Romans 5:8 presses this even deeper: "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." The word "commendeth" means to demonstrate, to prove beyond dispute. God did not wait until we cleaned ourselves up. He loved us at our worst, our most broken, our furthest from Him. That is the love that found you.
For the new believer, let this settle into your bones: you did not earn your way into God's heart, and you cannot fall your way out of it. His love is the starting line, not the finish line. For those who have walked with God for years, sit here a moment longer, when did you last let this truth be genuinely new? The God who flung galaxies into place looked at you in your sin and said, "Worth it." Let that be enough for today.
Pause & reflect
According to John 3:16-17 and Romans 5:8, what was the condition of the people God chose to love, and what does that tell you about the nature of His love?
Is there any part of your past or present that you secretly wonder might put you beyond the reach of God's love? What would it mean to bring that specific thing before this verse today?
Choose one person in your life who needs to hear that they are loved by God, how might you carry that message to them before the day is over?
A prayer for today
Father, I confess that I have sometimes treated Your love as something I must earn or maintain by my own effort. Thank You that while I was yet a sinner, Christ died for me, not because of who I am, but because of who You are. Let this love be the ground beneath my feet today, steady and sure, no matter what I face. Amen.
